Title: Dream-Sweepers
Author: fitz_y
Rating: R
Pairings: Morgana/Morgause, past Gwen/Morgana, past Gwen/Arthur
Summary: The same year Morgana Pendragon was born to an experimental test subject in the labs at Camelot Pharmaceuticals, the company invented a drug that cuts Cerebral Hyperactivity Disorder (CHAD) in half, rendering so-called sorcerers (sufferers of CHAD) incapable of practicing “magic” and therefore no longer default enemies of the United States. Instead, they are patients.

At 23 years old, Morgana Pendragon and two other illegally unmedicated CHAD-sufferers carried out an unsuccessful attempt on the life of Camelot’s CEO, Uther Pendragon.

Now, ten years later, Morgana’s magic stays locked away under her skin, a dull itching reminder of the mistakes she once made. Every night she sleeps through prophetic dreams. Every morning she vomits them out as the drugs coursing through her blood scour any lingering memories from her REM cycles. She visits the hospital, her parole officer, and the club where she tends bar. She injects herself with the required barrage of medicines. She keeps her head down and snarls at anyone who approaches with a curious, “Aren’t you the Pendragon girl, the one from the trial?” She is done with dreaming.

Until Morgause walks back into her life, pursuing her, whispering in her ear.

Until the story begins again.

Word Length: 43,900
Warnings: Graphic descriptions of illness and of non-consensual medical treatment. Character death (minor). Incestuous thoughts without any actual incest. Reference to rape (not portrayed).

Why I'm recommending this fic: I've been waiting impatiently to rec this ever since I did a SPaG beta for it because it is SO FANTASTIC. TBH, Morgana is not my favorite character, on the show or in fics. But here, fitz_y has made Morgana a believable, sympathetic, three-dimensionl character. I connected with her and was rooting for her to succeed. The same goes for Morgause. The Morgana/Morgause relationship is a slow-burning one, very nuanced (not incest in this verse). Even if you don't usually read femslash or fics centering around these characters I highly encourage you to read this fic because it not only has great characterization but also an edge-of-your seat, stomach-twisted-into-knots plot. Mind the warnings, because Morgana is going through some truly horrible things, but the verse is intriguing and well-developed. There is also a brilliant re-imagining of some canon events, which I can't say more about or it would spoil it, and the most gripping finale that I've read in a long time.

The end will leave you begging for more, and you are in luck because two sequels will be posted soon!

Title: Rinse, Lather, repeat
Author: leashy babes (link goes to AO3)
Rating: NC 17
Pairings: Arthr/Merlin
Summary: (author's summary): Crumble fic under running water, and be sure to suspend disbelief before bathing. An epic tale of awkwardness, daft boys, and love as expressed through bathing products (yes, you read that right. Bathing products).
Word Length: 11420
Warnings: None

Why I'm recommending this fic : Merlin works in a Lush store, Arthur works in The Body Shop. A wonderfully warm tale about love and free samples.

It has boys being ridiculous in love, with a hint of meddling Morgana.

This fic is perfect with a cup of tea, it really makes me smile. The porn is very well written and doesn't feel shoehorned into the story for the sake of it.
Title: The History of Two Conversations (On Paper)
Author: takadainmate
Rating: R-ish?
Pairings: Arthur/Merlin
Summary: Books are defaced. But it's all for a good cause. Really.
Word Length: 11,114
Warnings: None that I can think of.
Why I'm recommending this fic : It's like a canon era epistolary fic, and I have a secret weakness for those. Merlin starts writing very useful notes in the margins of his magic book. These get discovered, by various people, leading to some interesting consequences.

It's a magic reveal fic, and as such has anger and angst, but none of it feels overwritten, or overly dramatic. A lot of it is done through actions rather than words which feels so very IC for both of them.

The reconciliation is much the same, with a lovely smattering of humour.

I'm going to post a snippet (I had issues deciding which bit, but I think this captures the fun parts of the fic perfectly).

[Spoiler (click to open)]Arthur had written, I am the crown prince. You will not tell me what to do, beneath Merlin's red underlines. Merlin wrote, It's my book. Arthur followed up two days later with, It's in my drawer, to which Merlin retorted, Then write on your drawers. In response to this Arthur drew a vaguely passable pair of long women's underwear with an arrow pointing to them reading, Merlin's. Merlin rolled his eyes and imagined that Arthur had probably been extremely proud of himself for that one. Merlin wrote, Spell for Turning Arthur into a Woman, and then actually wrote the incantation beneath that would do it. Just because he was feeling vindictive and in no way thinking of Arthur as a woman. Mostly because it was a pretty horrid thought.

He should have seen it coming, Merlin decided, the next day when he saw that Arthur had crossed out Arthur, writtenMerlin above it and then followed up with NOT REQUIRED BECAUSE HE'S ALREADY ONE.

Title: The Very Important Quest
Author: angstslashhope
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: On a Very Important Quest, Arthur and Merlin share clothes, beds, bathwater and secrets.
Word Length: 24506
Warnings: Veg*n warning: Gory death of animals within. Also taxidermy. (These two warnings are unrelated.)

Why I'm recommending this fic : I think a lot of the reason is that this is a canon fic, and it's rare for me to read/like those these days, but this one had me right from the word go. Also, it's almost 25k but I honestly had to go check that it was over 10k and therefore eligible to post here; I think that shows how good it was and how quickly I devoured it, despite it's length. I love how Arthur finds out about Merlin's magic, I love the characterisations, I love the setting and the whole plot. Basically, I loved it.
This is a more recent fic (Jan 12) but I will post more older recs shortly (as requested on the profile page) but for now wanted to also rec this one in case anyone had missed it.
Title: Lions and Pebbles and Penguins, Oh My!
Author: fuzzytomato02
Rating: PG-13 (that's what I have it listed as)
Pairings: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Sitting at the top of "Uther's All Time Parenting Backfires" is Arthur's fellow colleague and clumsy best friend - Merlin Emrys.Written for the kink_me prompt of: Arthur and Merlin as penguins, based on this article w/c is basically about 2 male penguins who paired off and raised an egg successfully.
Word Length: 10,306
Warnings: Animal attack

Why I'm recommending this fic : Another slightly older fic, though this one is only a couple of years old. It's a modern AU (which of course I love) which is set in a zoo and it's utterly and completely adorable - go read it and I defy you not to smile ridiculously throughout =)

Title: A Binding contract
Author: Eldee (Link goes to their Ao3
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Arthur/Merlin, Nimueh/Uther
Summary: [Author's summary]In a society where people with magic are considered to be dangerous, are labelled as freaks, and have their powers cut off from them, Merlin does whatever he can to survive the hard life he’s faced with. When he’s in desperate need of money, Merlin’s landlord Aredian arranges and offers a magically binding contract in which Merlin is to become a ‘companion’ to Uther Pendragon’s son, Arthur. And when Merlin feels compelled to accept it, he never would have imagined that one man could change his life so completely.
Word Length: Just shy of 100k
Warnings: I'm going to warm for sex trade work, and unequal relationships. There's a lot of taking advantage of the vulnerable position magic users are in going on.

Why I'm recommending this fic : I adore Eldee's stuff, and this is no exception. The world-building here is fantastic, and your heart aches for magic users. Arthur is himself, noble, brittle at times, and good-hearted (and a prat at times). Merlin is brattish, seductive, and impulsive. Together they complement each other well.

The way magic is used throughout the fic, the way Merlin interacts with it, is unusual and fully realised.

I've just stumbled across this comm this morning, and so I'm going to dig out some recs :D

Title: Three Tasks
Author: syllic
Rating: R
Pairings: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Arthur is the Royal Arbiter for Suitable Suitors' Disputes. He (and his trusty companion, the golden-dragon-tasselled hat) alone can determine who is fit to woo royal servants and other assorted courtiers in Uther's court. (In light of the preceding sentence, the following may not appear to be a truthful statement, but: not as cracky as that makes it sound. Really.)
Word Length: Approximately 30,600
Warnings: None

Why I'm recommending this fic : Firstly because I can't believe no-one else has recced it yet! It's wonderful, it's funny, it's sweet, and if you haven't read it yet you don't know what you're missing; everyone should read this and I think it's one of the classics. Or if it's not, it should be considered so. And it's one of my all-time favourite Merlin stories. And considering it's canon rather than my preferred modern AU, that's really saying something.

I can't believe it's a year since someone recced a fic on this community, though I'm just as much to blame for that. Hence this rec, and probably more to follow. I really wish more people would rec to this wonderful comm; I adore really long fics (particularly modern AU's) and am always on the look out for ones recced by other people =)

Title: Avalon
Author: mariana_oconnor
Rating: R for language and adult themes.
Pairings: None as the focus, but Gwen/Lancelot, pre-slash Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Crossover. This has been written for reel_merlin, so those of you who know Serenity and Firefly will know what to expect. For the others: After loosing the war former sergeant Will becomes the captain of an old spaceship holding a mismatched crew. When he lets travelers from a central planet on board he doesn’t know that they will end up hunted by the government while unraveling secrets about magic, Skinleakers and to what length the government will go to protect those.
Word Length: ~43500
Warnings: Violence, Character death (major & minor), abuse of Old English

Why I'm recommending this fic: The author did an excellent job of fitting the Merlin characters into the Firefly/Serenity universe that what we love about both shows stayed true in it. We have the magic and the oppression of it from Merlin and the historical happenings and power struggles from Serenity and it just works so incredible well together it rocks my socks. It can be read without any knowledge of the movie (I think) and next to translations for all the old English used in it it has an alternative ending :) I had lots of fun reading this one <3

Title: The King of Queens'
Author: pickitup
Rating: PG-13 at the start, but will end up NC-17
Pairings: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Modern AU. Merlin has always dreamed of going to Cambridge University and is thrilled to win a place at Queens’ College. Whilst there he falls hopelessly in love with the JCR President, drinking society President, Lacrosse captain and all-round popular guy Arthur Pendragon. Arthur takes him under his wing until Merlin stands to be LGBT Rep on the JCR and Arthur realises that Merlin likes boys. Full of Cambridge slang, UST, Arthur being a knobhead with no knob, and eventual happy ending. I promise.
Word Length: ~45k
Warnings: Some homophobia

Why I'm recommending this fic: I just love good coming to terms with being gay stories and this is one of them. This ff feels so real to me, from the worries the characters have to the situations they end up in. And I’m awed by the talent oft he author for making Arthur such a dick head and still let him remain like-able. Somehow :)
